Frequently Asked Questions

What is the SBDC?
SBDC-Renton is partnership between Renton Technical College, the City of Renton, Renton Chamber of Commerce, with additional direct support from First Savings Bank and Frontier Bank.  It is a resource for aspiring or established business owners to help find solutions to their unique situations.  The SBDC is here to help business owners start new companies; develop loan packages; connect with new customers;  forcast sales, profit, cash flow;  help improve HR Systems, and grow their business.

How can the SBDC help me?
SBDC-Renton offers confidential counseling at no charge to individuals who wish to start, sell, or improve a small business.  Counselors are available by appointment Monday - Friday.  Training is also available for a wide selection of business topics.

Does the SBDC offer assistance in getting a bank loan to start a small business?
Yes.  SBDC-Renton works with local banks, as well as national banks, to help obtain loans for qualified individuals wishing to start a small business.

Does the SBDC offer assistance in getting a grant to start a small business?
No.  SBDC-Renton doesn't have access to business grants.

Who directs the SBDC ?
Jim Kallenberg, Business Advisor

Jim provides business advising service to business owners and start up companies in Renton. He is a skilled business advisor and passionate entrepreneur who can help business owners gain new insight into their businesses. He received his degree in Economics from the University of Washington. He has experience founding and building his own companies, consulting to the construction and food industry and working in multi-cultural environments and in international trade.

Jim has over 25 years of experience in the fields of construction management, food and cold storage facilities design and business management and international sales. This includes both startup, and mature business environments with both large and small firms. He has business ownership experience, and has performed many management roles: project manager, financial manager, business owner and general manager. Jim has expertise in project management, product development, building design, international food and equipment sales and trading, internet marketing, tradeshow management, marketing, executive recruiting, and working with entrepreneurs.

Areas of Specialization:
Developing sales and marketing strategies, internet marketing, writing business plans and loan proposals, business planning, new product development and commercialization, construction management, food plant development, and government agency code compliance.
