Basic Skills -

Do Your Students Need Some Help?

“I didn’t know this program was going to take so much skills...writing.” Do you hear this from your students?

Or do employers tell you that their new employees are have a “skills gap”? A National Association of Manufacturers survey reported that 59% of new workers lacked “basic employability skills (attendance, timeliness, etc), that 34% had poor reading and writing skills, and 26% had inadequate math skills.

Consider sending the students to the Library to look for basic skills videos and DVDs.  In this issue we look at just a few of the many helpful titles carried by RTC Library.

Computer skills resources are covered in the article below.  On page 2, we look at a few ESL resources, and videos on other communications topics, including writing and giving presentations. On page 3, titles that deal with mathematics and those all-important interpersonal skills titles are reviewed.

On page 4, the focus shifts to other departments on campus that offer basic skills assistance, and finally spotlights a Library resource that teaches fundamental physics knowledge

Computer Skills

Are your students internet savvy, but lack familiarity with useful Microsoft programs? Try the following videos or DVDs:

Word 2003, Levels 1-2. Media Call # 652.5535 MICROSO 2004w

PowerPoint 2003, Levels 1-2. Media Call # 006.6869 POWERPO 2004

Excel 2003, Levels 1-2. Media Call # 005.36922 MICROSO 2004e.

Are they totally unfamiliar with computers?  The Open Lab in the TRC building and the Student Success Center offer a program called Teknimedia VLC, which covers how to use a mouse, buttons, icons, and how to open and close programs. Tell them to ask at the desk for help finding the program.

Do they need keyboarding practice? Both the Library and the Open Lab offer access to Southwest Keyboarding. There are drills for all skill levels.

Does your class need instruction on doing research for assignments?  Call Debbie Crumb, at x5678, to schedule a Library class on searching for websites, books, or journal articles.

Popcorn and Previews

Instructional Improvement and the RTC Library are teaming up to offer you previews of classroom media resources.

Once a month we’ll take an hour to show clips from a few of the library’s videos, DVDs, or CDs, and discuss ways the material might be used in the class.  We’re choosing materials that can be used in any classroom, from welding to phlebotomy.   And we’ll provide the popcorn!
