Seattle Public Utilities Water Pipe Worker
The Work
Water pipe workers perform a variety of skilled work in the installation,
maintenance, repair, and operation of water mains and water services in the
city’s distribution system, and pipelines, dams and headworks in the
transmission system.
Working Conditions
Work is performed outdoors in all types of weather, in confined areas. The
employee is often exposed to chlorine while flushing new services. The employee
works around heavy equipment and in heavy traffic. Kneeling, crawling, bending
and lifting objects weighing over forty pounds are required.
The Apprenticeship
The Seattle Public Utilities Water Pipe Worker Apprenticeship Program is a
two-year program designed to give hands on and classroom instruction and
provides an opportunity to “earn while you learn”.
During the on-the-job training, apprentices work as a member of a crew under the
supervision of journey level workers. In addition to the on-the-job training,
the apprentice will be required to attend 144 hours of classroom instruction a
year for 2 years.
Graduates of the program will receive a certificate of completion from the
Washington State Apprenticeship Training Council, proving their qualifications
as a highly-skilled journey-level Water Pipe Worker.
Apprenticeship Entry Requirements

Be able to demonstrate physical ability and mechanical aptitude

Have completed high school courses in mathematics and reading/comprehension

Be willing to work in all types of weather conditions

Be willing to work below ground or in confined spaces

Be able to lift and carry a minimum of 40 pounds

Be able to use basic hand, power and digging tools

Current Washing State Driver’s License
-
Must obtain a Commercial Driver’s License, Flagging and Traffic Control Card,
and First Aid and CPR certifications within 6 months of hire

Applicants selected for hire are required to pass a physical examination and
drug test prior to employment
Desired Qualifications:

High school graduate or GED
-
High school courses in algebra and geometry, and competent in fractions and
decimals

Able to read maps, specifications and detailed instructions

Good communication and interpersonal skills
-
Able to work safely, productively and always be alert
-
Able to provide own transportation to remote work sites
