Seattle Public Utilities Water Pipe Worker

The Work
Water pipe workers perform a variety of skilled work in the installation, maintenance, repair, and operation of water mains and water services in the city’s distribution system, and pipelines, dams and headworks in the transmission system.

Working Conditions
Work is performed outdoors in all types of weather, in confined areas. The employee is often exposed to chlorine while flushing new services. The employee works around heavy equipment and in heavy traffic. Kneeling, crawling, bending and lifting objects weighing over forty pounds are required.

The Apprenticeship
The Seattle Public Utilities Water Pipe Worker Apprenticeship Program is a two-year program designed to give hands on and classroom instruction and provides an opportunity to “earn while you learn”.

During the on-the-job training, apprentices work as a member of a crew under the supervision of journey level workers. In addition to the on-the-job training, the apprentice will be required to attend 144 hours of classroom instruction a year for 2 years.
