FEDERAL FAMILY EDUCATION LOAN PROGRAM

The Federal Family Education Loan programs offer long term loans which allow students to postpone paying for a portion of their school expenses until after they graduate or leave school. Repayment begins six months after completion or withdrawal from school. There are three types of loans available under this program.

  • Subsidized Stafford Loans are need-based. A student’s eligibility to borrow is based on financial need as determined by the federal government which pays interest on the loan while the student is in school.
  • Unsubsidized Stafford Loans do not require a student to show financial need; however the cost of the student’s education must exceed any other financial aid offered. The student, not the federal government, is responsible to pay all the interest that accrues on this loan.
  • PLUS loans are loans a parent takes out in order to pay for their child’s educational expenses. A FAFSA is not required to get a PLUS loan. Contact the financial aid office if you are interested in applying for a PLUS loan.

Students who borrow under the Federal Family Education Loan Program are required to complete counseling before receiving their first loan payment and again shortly before graduating or leaving school. Renton Technical College offers Entrance Loan Counseling on-line. (Remember, a student must first complete a Free Application for Federal Student Aid, FAFSA, to determine loan eligibility.)

Upon completion, the Financial Aid Office will receive confirmation of your test score and will mail out the remaining paperwork. If you don’t receive the additional paperwork within a few days, please call our office at (425)235-5841.

Note: When you click on Loan Entrance Counseling, you will be directed to create a new account. Follow the directions carefully to access Online Loan Counseling. Make a note of your new user ID and password as you will need them to access your records in the future.

Exit counseling is required before you can receive your last disbursement of your loan. You can access the exit counseling on-line by clicking on the link below. Once you have completed the counseling, the financial aid office will be notified. At that time, we will notify the business office that you may pick up your check.
