LGBTQ - Student Success Initiative

Welcome!

We are committed to promoting a safe and inclusive learning environment for LGBTQ students at Renton Technical College, and in order to do this, we need your help! Collecting data will allow us to know more about our students and thus, be better prepared to design and develop curricular and co-curricular programs that reflect students' diverse perspectives and experiences.

We believe the implementation of this new process will serve as a testimony of our commitment to diversity, academic achievement and student success. This information can be used to help inform the possible development of programs or services. For example:

  • Campus Safe Zones Projects and Training
  • LGBTQ/Diversity Student Centers
  • Student, Staff, and Faculty Professional Development
  • Mentoring for LGBTQ Organizations and Clubs
  • Course Offerings
  • Funding and Scholarships

When students register for fall, 2013 classes at Renton Technical College, they will see two new questions on the registration form:

  1. What is your sexual orientation?
    • Bisexual
    • Gay
    • Lesbian
    • Queer
    • Straight/heterosexual
    • Other
    • Prefer not to answer
  2. What is your gender identity?
    • Feminine
    • Masculine
    • Androgynous
    • Gender neutral
    • Transgender
    • Other
    • Prefer not to answer

These questions will be optional; however, we encourage students to provide this confidential information so we can design and implement programs and services that provide meaningful and rewarding learning opportunities for all students.

How Will the Data be Secured?

These data elements will be included as part of the student’s biographical record, available for college institutional research, and reported to the SBCTC as part of the state reporting MIS process. This will provide the capacity to extract data from a system-wide perspective. The SBCTC does not share sensitive data unless the Presidents have approved the use of the data.

The OFM Education Research and Data Center (ERDC) has developed detailed guidelines indicating who would have the ability to gain access to this data. They have also adopted a set of redaction policies to ensure that aggregated data is also not identifiable.
