FAQ’s

  1. Do I need strong math skills?
    We do have a minimum Compass math score requirement. If you do not meet that requirement, you will need to work with Basic Studies to improve those skills.

  2. Do I have to be able to type fast?
    The industry standard for typing is 40 words per minute. The industry standard for 10-key is 180 digits per minute.

  3. Will I be able to get a job?
    We do not guarantee anyone a job. We will help you work on a resume, how to look for work, and how to interview; but, getting a job depends on you (your ability, recommendations, interviewing skills, references, history, etc.)

  4. How much homework will there be?
    Although good usage of your lab times will reduce much of your “at home” homework time, you may still have 1 to 2 hours homework per night.

  5. Are the classes transferable to other colleges?
    Some classes are transferable (and some are not ) depending on agreements between institutions.

  6. What kind of jobs will this train me for?
    There are many accounting occupations, each demanding different levels of education and experience. First jobs with no experience, also depending education, may typically be an Accounts Payable/Receivable Clerk, Bookkeeper, Payroll Clerk, or Staff Accountant. With more education and experience, other positions become attainable: Cost Accountant, Public Accountant, , GL Accountant, Tax Accountant, Inventory Control Clerk, Office Assistant, Auditor, Bookkeeping Supervisor, Certified Public Accountant, Comptroller, Office Manager, Treasurer, Trust Officer.

  7. How much do accounting jobs pay?
    Starting pay for entry-level jobs usually range from $11 to $20 per hour.

  8. I have taken some classes at other schools; can I get credit for them?
    Depends on the school, the program, and the articulation agreement. This is something you would need to discuss with your RTC instructor.

  9. How much does the program cost?
    Typical costs include tuition, books, and some misc. expenses. These amounts vary with the length of the program and the change in college tuition. Contact registration for the most current tuition costs.

  10. How long does it take to complete the program?
    Depending on individual abilities and the accounting program you enroll in. The Clerk program will usually take 2 full quarters; the Paraprofessional program will usually take 4 quarters; and the Specialist program will usually take 6 quarters.

Skills for Success

  1. Dependability (attendance and tardiness)
  2. Initiative (don’t wait to be asked).
  3. Critical thinking while also be detail oriented.
  4. Keyboarding and 10-key speed.
  5. Good time management.
  6. Have a “good attitude” and work well in groups.
  7. Good oral and written communication.

Opportunities

  1. Many types of jobs in accounting including: Accounts Payable/Receivable Clerk, Bookkeeper, Payroll Clerk, or Staff Accountant.   2. Typical workweek is M-F, 8 – 5
  3. May be overtime during critical periods.
  4. Dress is usually business casual unless upper management.
  5. Job market is same for other occupations except that all businesses need accountants.
  6. Typical 1st job is entry level learning basic data entry of accounting information, filing, answering calls from clients, etc.
