Research Beyond Google

There are web search engines that may find you better material more quickly than Google.  They do it by limiting the web pages they list—only the pages with authoritative information are indexed. Below are two databases of guaranteed-to-be-great web pages.

ALA/RUSA Best Free Reference Web Sites is a database of free resources that reference librarians have voted to be valuable for research. Find it at: http://tinyurl.com/yf4xbl

The database consists of pages from such sites as the Bureau of Labor Statistics, Centers for Disease Control, NASA, Amazon, the US Census Bureau, Britannica, Science Daily, and other useful resources.  When you search this database, you really are searching a small subset of the best resources on the web.

This is database is part of Google Co-op, a program to create small custom-made search engines.  Want to build one of your own?  See http://www.google.com/coop/

Librarians Index to the Internethttp://www.lii.org . Their motto is ‘Websites you can trust.’  This is a larger version of Best Free Reference Web Sites.  It has over 20,000 websites.  Each has passed through a multi-layer approval process to evaluate its authoritativeness and reliability. You can also get to it through the library website: http://www.rtc.edu/library/ReferenceLinks.htm
