The library offers books, videos, and DVDs for self-teaching of basic skills. Other departments offer direct instruction. The Basic Studies department offers “Brush Up” classes, in mathematics, writing and study skills. Many of these classes are discipline specific. "Math for Health Care Success" and "Writing Basics" are two examples. Three Online classes are also available: Learning at Lunch: Writing Basics, Learning at Lunch Paragraph Basics, and Basics for Business Writing. These are courses that have 50 emailed assignments. Students complete the assignment and email it back to the instructor. The instructor provides individualized comments on each lesson and returns it to the student. Evening classes are available, too. The Basic Studies department office is located in Building D. The phone number is (425) 235-2391. The Student Success Center offers tips on study skills, note taking, memorization and many other school and work skills. Tip sheets can be picked up by visiting the center or going online at (http://www.rtc.edu/StudentServices/StudentSuccessCenter/LearningResources/). Peer tutoring is also made available to students. Most students are matched with a peer from their same program because they have a good understanding of both the subject matter and the requirements for success in the program. The Student Success Center is located in J-218, and the Director, Susie Navone, can be reached at (425) 235-2352 x5514.” Judith Frey of Instructional Improvement notes that her department “works with instructors to differentiate or ‘layer’ instruction, to scaffold students to success. And we can help instructors identify or develop review and practice lessons for students through our campus license for Quia.” Instructional Improvement is located in Building J. Judith Frey can be reached at (425) 235-2352 x5750. Kathy Jenner, UDL Project Coordinator, noted that there are many assistive software titles on campus. WynnReader, available in the Library and other labs, is very useful for students with literacy deficits.
