Registered Nurse Admission Requirements

  • Minimum age: 18 years (at time of clinical placement)
  • High school diploma or GED
  • Ability to read, write and converse in English
  • Have health insurance for both injury and sickness upon entry into the program
  • Hold a current, valid and unencumbered license as a Certified Nursing Assistant for the State of Washington
  • Complete seven (7) hours of HIV Training Certification; the training must have been completed within five (5) years of program entry
  • Unexpired First Aid and Healthcare Provider Level "C" CPR training
  • Six (6) months work experience as a Certified Nursing Assistant; an original letter of verification from employer is required (effective fall 2012)
  • Complete the web-based national criminal background check within three (3) months of application
  • Submission of original lab results, x-ray reports, immunizations record(s) etc., that are dated, signed and provided by a physician, nurse practitioner, physician's assistant or the local health department, in accordance to the Centers for Disease Control guidelines that include proof of the following health requirements:
    • Hepatitis B
    • Flu Vaccine(s) (Seasonal and H1N1)
    • MMR (Measles (Rubeola), Mumps and Rubella)
    • Varicella (Chicken Pox)
    • Td/Tdap (Tetanus/Diphtheria/Pertussis)
    • Tuberculosis (medical documentation of negative TB skin test or, if there is a history of positive skin tests, a chest x-ray examination)
    • Health Record (physical must be within the prior three (3) months of the packet submittal)
      • Evaluation by a physician, nurse practitioner or physician's assistant to ensure student and patient safety. The evaluation must address the following areas with respect to the student's ability to perform the laboratory skills and clinical responsibilities related to becoming a Registered Nurse:
        • Ability to lift a minimum of 50 pounds and to reach overhead
        • Ability to stand or walk for long periods
        • Ability to perform multiple tasks simultaneously
  • Meet prerequisite course requirements as shown below with the following requirements: 1) a minimum grade of 2.5 in each course (two (2) attempts per course only); 2) a cumulative GPA of 2.75 or better; 3) courses must have been completed within ten (10) years prior to program entry; and 4) course credit value must be obtained:
    • Anatomy and Physiology I, five (5) credits
    • Anatomy and Physiology II, five (5) credits
    • Microbiology, five (5) credits
    • Human Nutrition, five (5) credits
    • Medical Terminology, three (3) credits or five (5) credits
    • English Composition, five (5) credits
    • General Psychology, five (5) credits
    • Statistics, five (5) credits
    • Developmental Psychology, five (5) credits (effective fall 2012)
    • General Biology, five (5) credits (or see last bullet)
    • Chemistry, five (5) credits (or see last bullet)
      • One-year of high school level chemistry and general biology are acceptable as meeting the Prerequisite Course Requirement fulfillment ONLY if they have been completed within five (5) years prior to entry to the program.
