Worker Retraining

Return to work in a new career or with upgraded skills!

You may qualify for Worker Retraining assistance with tuition, supplies, books, and child care. With approval from Employment Security, you may continue to receive unemployment benefits while attending full-time training until the date your benefits are exhausted. Start by checking if you fit one of the criteria:
  • You are currently receiving or are eligible to receive, Washington State unemployment benefits.
  • You have received a layoff notice and will be laid off soon.
  • You have exhausted Washington State unemployment benefits within the last two years.
  • You are a displaced homemaker, meaning that you were dependent on the income of another family member but are no longer supported by that income.
  • You were self-employed, operating your own business, and are now unemployed because of economic downturn.

What are the services available through Worker Retraining?

  • Start-up funding (financial aid) for the first quarter of a full-time program
  • Career planning and academic assessment
  • Employment Security WorkSource Specialist on campus
  • Assistance with paperwork: Commissioner Approved Training (CAT) or Training Benefits (TB), Trade Adjustment Act (TAA), Workforce Investment Act (WIA), Pell Grant
  • Job placement assistance

Worker Retraining is designed to help you gain the skills and certification needed to be competitive in today's job market. The program is a partnership between technical and community colleges and Employment Security. Worker Retraining has provided an opportunity for job training to thousands of eligible Washington workers since 1993.
