Return to Campus Policy, Fall 2021

For the latest information for students about Renton Technical College COVID-19 protocols, visit the COVID-19 Information for Students page.

There are unique concerns within the Health and Human Services area of study because of clinical rotation, externship and internship partner requirements. All healthcare students who have clinical rotations, externships and internships must follow the vaccination requirements of the healthcare institution where they will be working-i.e., must be fully vaccinated or have an exemption prior to their clinical rotation, externship or internship experience.

Please note: Not all clinical rotation, externship and internship sites will accept exemptions.

Effective immediately, Renton Technical College will operate under the mandate of a fully vaccinated campus. All newly enrolled Health and Human Services students should have, at minimum, the first vaccination dose prior to the start of fall quarter (September 20, 2021) and proof of vaccination uploaded to Castlebranch. This requirement must be completed within the timeframe of the second dose, depending on which vaccine is taken. Students that do not comply will not continue in a health and human services program.

Students returning for program completion in the fall quarter are expected to be fully vaccinated, have started the vaccination process and have the second dose completed prior to September 20, 2021, or have an acceptable exemption.

Students who enroll in Health and Human Services programs who are not vaccinated will not qualify to fulfill the clinical rotation, externship, or internship portion of the program, and therefore, will not complete the graduation requirement for certificates, licensure, AAS, or AAS-T programs. These requirements are mandated by the program accrediting bodies, the Washington Department of Health and our clinical, externship and internship partners. Renton Technical College will adhere to the guidelines provided.

If a student declines the vaccination and does not have an appropriate exemption, the student cannot participate in on-campus instruction or services. For clinical placement, the College cannot guarantee that a partner site will allow unvaccinated students to complete clinical rotations, externship, or internship hours. Therefore, students who decline the COVID-19 vaccination will be withdrawn from their Health and Human Services program.

Students scheduled for clinical rotations, externships or internships prior to September 27, 2021, are required to be fully vaccinated, including the two-week waiting prior, no later than the first day of the clinical rotation, externship, or internship. Students will be asked to fill out required paperwork for clinical rotation, externship and internship. At that time, students must provide proof of vaccination prior to the start.

Vaccination Requirement

Two-dose vaccines (Pfizer/BioNTech, Moderna): For students who will be on clinical rotations, the first day of the quarter: September 20; they are fully compliant if they received their second shot on September 6.

Students who are continuing their programs at Renton Technical College must have their second dose no later than October 4, 2021. Along with the two-week waiting period from the second dose, this achieves full vaccination by October 18, 2021.
