Founded in 1994, the Massage School is open Monday through Friday for 6.5 hours a day. There are 5 classes, and students must carry 20-22 credits a quarter. Types of classes range from kinesthesiology to Eastern theories, human relations and ethics. Students start with half-lab and half-lecture, and then start working in the clinic, which is held during class hours. An instructor is present at all times.
Massage studies are intensive, with three to four hours of homework a night. Students learn the name and function of every muscle in the human body. They learn the most common diseases of the body's systems, and later, must do one to two massages a week outside of the school in a professional environment. The student fills out a form after the massage, and the client fills out a feedback form as well.
As the program goes on, hands-on work increases so that by the third quarter students are ready for their externship, where they work in two local spas or a physical therapy clinic and a spa for two days a week for six weeks. A doctor or nurse practitioner is on staff and supervises the student. This helps students get experience in a business environment, and can get a recommendation from a professional outside of the clinic.
