Aspen Institute Commends Renton Technical College

Wednesday, March 18, 2015

Renton Technical College is deeply committed to providing higher education access and expanding job opportunities for its highly diverse student body. Located in a working-class area of southeast Seattle, Renton serves an unusually large contingent of nontraditional students – 70% are age 25 and older, compared to 40% nationally. Though most students enter with remedial needs, faculty keep students on track towards their goals through Washington State’s I-BEST (Integrated Basic Education and Skills Training) model, in which foundational skills are embedded in professional and technical classes rather than being taught separately. Renton’s structured career pathways help students move quickly to a degree or other credential, with 79% of credentials earned at the college being vocational/technical. Renton has exemplary workforce training programs and strong partnerships with local industry, including Boeing and Ford Motor Company, and this is reflected in high job placement rates.
