Canvas access has been restored for all users at RTC.
Instructure, the company that operates Canvas, discovered on May 7, an unauthorized actor made changes to pages that appeared when some students and instructors logged in. As a precaution to prevent further unauthorized access, they took Canvas offline while they confirmed how the unauthorized actor gained access and remediated to prevent further issues.
At this time, based on the information available to us, we are clear to resume use of Canvas and related coursework activities.
As a reminder, please continue to remain alert for phishing or social-engineering attempts targeting students and employees. A few things to keep in mind:
- Renton Technical College will never ask for your password by email, text, or phone.
- Use only official college websites and login pages to access Canvas, ctcLink, and other college services.
- Report suspicious activity via Outlook Report phishing message function, or to the CTS Service Desk.
- It has also been reported that some students at other colleges have received direct emails with messages seeking money from purported hackers. If students and staff have or do receive such emails, also report those messages to the CTS Service Desk.

You may have heard that the Canvas is back up, but Washington Community and Technical College continues to block access, while the State Board determines whether it is safe. RTC will provide another update this afternoon.
Thank you for your patience.

A cybersecurity attack has shut down Canvas at all institutions, including RTC. We don’t yet know if any information has been compromised. We will keep you updated as we learn more. Students and faculty will work together regarding lesson plans and assignments during the outage. Students can find contact information for their instructors in the class schedules in ctcLink or on the college website.
The college is experiencing a Canvas maintenance message when trying to access the Canvas website. CTS and eLearning are monitoring the status and will provide an update as soon as possible.
There is no expected timeline for the maintenance being conducted by Instructure, the parent company of Canvas.
